If you can’t eat oreos, why not wear them on your feet? There’s a shoe bakery with the same name that can make this wish possible. Although real-looking, these shoes are custom works of art, so you can permanently “savor” your favorite sweet treat. If you’re looking for a unique way to stand out on your wedding day or prom or at Fashion Week, these shoes will make a statement. With flavors like gingerbread, vanilla ice cream, and frosted donuts with rainbow sprinkles, these shoes are certain to make a mouth-watering statement at that. We sat down with Chris Campbell, owner of Shoe Bakery to learn more about his business and the inspiration behind it.
When did you launch Shoe Bakery and what was the inspiration for its creation?
I launched Shoe Bakery around July last year with the help of my then fiancée and now wife. I have always had a sweet tooth growing up. I also love the creativity and the thought that is put into women’s shoes. I thought it would be a great idea to combine the two.
What is the process of making a custom shoe? What are your shoes made of? Do you only make shoes?
When starting a design, I style the product along the lines of something I’m inspired by. I also take inspiration from the things around me. Mostly everyone gets excited when they eat a donut or cake, so I try to see if I can translate it into something wearable. I sketch the ideas down in my sketchbook that I carry everywhere! I pile up ideas until I come up with a design I’m happy with; after that, I get to work. Most of the time we use a pre-existing shoe to customize. The design on the shoes is made of an acrylic medium along with faux fruit, paint, and embellishments. We also hand customize some small items like phone cases and clutch bags.
For what occasions do women purchase your shoes?
We noticed that the majority of the women who buy our shoes are brides and bakers. We’ve also noticed a lot of women purchase our shoes to be different and stand out. This is something we love and stand behind 100%.
Which are some of the most popular shoe flavors? The red velvet flats are a personal favorite! (I’m a size 8.5, just saying.)
[Laughs] Nice, I love the red velvets as well. It really depends on the type of shoe. As far as heels, the Ice Cream heels are really taking off. As far as flats, the Pink Sprinkle flats are really satisfying people’s sweet tooth.
Do you ever eat cake while you’re making your shoes? Because you should.
It’s funny you ask. We don’t normally eat cake while we are making the shoes, but sometimes we need to have actual sweets around to recall in detail how cake texture and royal icing look. So for reference reasons, we bring a slice of cake or donut back to the studio and get to work. Once we are done with the project, we end up eating it anyway. When we don’t have a real cake or donut to reference in the studio, we do make ourselves hungry while making the shoes. [laughs]
Who would you like to see wearing your shoes? Any particular celebrity chef or foodie you’d like to see walk the red carpet in your heels?
We have a couple celebs in mind, but for now we are trying to get a hold of Katy Perry and possibly Kat Von D. I think they would really appreciate our shoes.
Your shoes give new meaning to the expression “shoe fetish.” Thoughts?
In creating these works of art, we knew they were going to touch on so many desires: one being shoes and the other sweets. The fact that they are art, just adds to the mixture, creating something unique and leaving people wanting more. We always tell people about our business and slogan, “Sweets for Your Feet!” The slogan goes perfect with the shoes, almost feeding your inner cravings.
I’m going to ask the question every woman wants to know: are these heels comfortable?
We don’t really change the comfort of the shoes. We make only aesthetic changes. If anything, the shoe just gets a bit heavier.
What can we expect from Shoe Bakery in the future?
We have so much planned for the future of Shoe Bakery. We are working on releasing our own brand of heels alongside our handmade line. We are working on accessories and maybe a clothing line. I am an artist, so I would love to actually put out some art pieces and have a gallery opening sometime soon as well. Stay tuned.
Thanks for chatting with us Chris and all the best!
